Another Step in the Journey

>> Saturday, January 12, 2008

Last night, my mother's body was cremated. Such an incredible act of finality. Never to hold her hand again, never to hug her, never to listen to her voice (and that charming southern accent).

I've been surprised at how the littlest things seem to choke me up. Last night, over dinner, my dad told us that he removed her rings before the medical staff came to pick up her body from their motorhome in the parking lot of the hospital. There was just something about the mental picture of my father pulling the rings from her fingers that's haunted me all night.

I haven't really cried yet. I feel like I've been close several times, but either the setting hasn't been comfortable, or else there have been tasks to do, or else I've needed to be there to comfort Margo or one of the kids. I suspect helping to clear out mom's belongings tomorrow will be a really emotional experience.

Today we're driving down to dad's home in Texas. I am SO grateful for God's timing that our family has been able to be here to share this journey with him. We'll spend the week there making final arrangements and just being together as a family. The memorial service is scheduled for next Saturday morning.

Thanks to everyone who has posted, written, and called over the last couple of days. We *really* appreciate the love and encouragement. (Oh, and Matt Moore -- if you're reading this -- send my your e-mail, bro. I'd love to catch up! scott.heine@comcast.net)

Scott, Margo, Ben, Beth, & Becky,

My thoughts, love, and prayers are with you all. I miss you and wish I could be there with you.

I can't help but to praise God for his mercy. He didn't want your mom to go through chemo. so He rescued her from it. Praise Him!

I am blessed for having met her.

Love you all.

It's always in the little things...where human connection and "real life" happens. What a blessing your mom was to so many, what a treasure she is to our Lord. We continue to pray for His mercy and tenderness toward each of you during this tough time. Bo and Christie
