We Have Liftoff...!

Last night, we held the first meeting of what will become an expanded leadership team for Hope Christian Fellowship. Our Elders have already done a great job shepherding the church, especially during the lengthy pastoral transition. Now we're adding men and women to fulfill that New Testament role of Deacon and offer administrative oversight. We spent last night sharing a meal, laughing together, looking in the Bible at the various leadership roles of the early church, choosing a team leader, coming up with metaphors, thinking through initial agenda stuff to tackle in the coming months, etc. It was fun. It was chaotic. It was productive. It felt a bit like taking the first bite in an attempt to eat an elephant. And the whole thing was saturated with the presence of God's Spirit. What great people! What great hearts for the Lord and for his church and for this community! I think this group is going to have an amazing impact on what we can accomplish at Hope, and I'm excited about working with such a terrific team.

I've been out of the loop for the past 3 weeks with vacation. I didn't realize we had an expanding leadership team or we were considering deacons. You didn't mention who they are so (In my best Seinfeld voice) "Who are these people?"

Ha ha ha! See what happens when you go on vacation?

Actually, we're just giving a sense of permanence to the "transitional leadership team" that Joe and the Elders had put in place, and have invited a couple of great women into the mix so we can all benefit from their wisdom. We'll be working to get some things up and running more smoothly for the short term (i.e., schedule changes in September, financial processes, etc.), then we'll come back to the bigger question of how leadership will be structured, people appointed, etc. when we rewrite the values and bylaw statements for the church later this year.

I'll be sharing more about changes and such coming our way during the next couple of Sunday morning services.
