Stop the Pain!

Arrgh! I can't stand it anymore! On my way to work this morning I was listening to the all-Christmas station again. For some completely insane reason that defies all human wisdom, they played Feliz Navidad again. That's the fourth time I've heard that song in two days. Does anyone actually like that song!? Its tune is annoying and sticks in your head for hours. The lyrics are pathetic. It repeats itself four times. It's just horrible! (Close runner ups include McCartney's Wonderful Christmas Time and Last Christmas by George Michael or anyone else foolish enough to have recorded that melodic nightmare.)

On the other hand, I've been surprised at the number of actual carols being woven into the mix. Seems like the all-Christmas station in Phoenix last year was limited to schmultzy shopping mall renditions of Frosty the Snowman or the Bowie/Crosby Drummer Boy kinds of tunes. But our Virginia station is playing O Little Town of Bethlehem and O Holy Night fairly often. Still no God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen or Angels We Have Heard on High yet, much less winners like Mary Did You Know. But I'm still hoping...

Awww...I like Feliz Navidad! It reminds me of when I was little, I can remember it playing in the car and my Mom singing along. I know, I am such a goober. But O Holy Night is still my favorite!

I confess I like Feliz Navidad, but only a couple time per year, not a couple of times per day. But then I actually own a Jose Feliciano CD (and , while I'm confessing, a Herb Albert and Tijuana Brass Christmas LP - do you remember when "My Favorite Things" was considered a Christmas song???)

I can totally ROCK out on my guitar to Feliz Navidad, but besides that, I'm not a big fan... :) The most annoying song of ALL times however, has to be the ever-popular, way-overplayed, "I Want A Hippopatomus For Christmas". When I worked at Hallmark, we had that Christmas station on the moment it started and for what felt like months...I was forced to listen to that song. Aaah!! I can hear it now... Good things that there are lots of great Christmas songs in church to balance everything out! :)
Miss you all and praying for a wonderful first Christmas in Virginia!

Since we are talking about annoying Christmas songs...what about the overly sappy Christmas shoes song. It's the type of song you almost feel guilty about not liking, but it REALLY bugs me!

(Ack! I acidentally hit "delete" on my own comment. Trying again...)

You know, maybe Feliz Navidad wouldn't be so bad if someone could just write a couple of new verses for it, perhaps throw in a key change, or something. It's just so repetitive. I don't mind it the first time I hear it in the season (well, not much). But that's about it; it doesn't bear repeating when there are so many other wonderful carols out there.

On the flip side, I stumbled across Pink Martini's rendition of The Little Drummer Boy and that was really, really cool. Do they have a Christmas album out? Time to Google, I suppose...

As for I Want a Hippo I haven't heard it yet this year. It's another one that I like perhaps once each season, but that's about it.

And you're totally right about that "shoes" song, Nicole. I don't like it either... and especially not this year.
