I'm... Dead?

>> Wednesday, November 5, 2008

I received an interesting letter in the mail today. It's addressed "To the Estate of Scott Heine," and sent from American Express. The letter reads,

----------

To Whom It May Concern:

We are writing you regarding the American Express Card account in the name of Scott Heine listed above. We recently learned from the Social Security Administration that Scott Heine has passed away and we wish to offer you our sincerest condolences for your loss.

Scott Heine was a valued Cardmember and we are committed to working with you during this difficult period. While we understand that this letter has come at a difficult time... (blah, blah, blah)

----------

The letter goes on to offer instructions to the caretakers of my estate regarding closing the account, settling any remaining balance, etc.

Of course, there's one problem: I'm not dead. At least, not that I know of.

A quick call to American Express revealed the source of the problem. Someone apparently typed in my Social Security number incorrectly; they were off by one digit.

Still, it's a little startling to receive a letter of condolence for your own death. Kind of funny, actually, but in a haunting way. I suppose it's a good reminder that life is very fragile, and that we shouldn't take any moment for granted. Here's to making the most of the time we're given!

The last tiem I saw you, you looked pretty healthy to me.....but then again, that was almost two weeks ago.

Just by means of double checking, have you looked in the mirror lately?

But then again, if you were able to write this post to your blog.......

This is just way too complicated!

There's a gamer joke here somewhere -- I'm just not sure I'm gamer enough anymore to make it.
