Our dog has cancer.

We found out yesterday. She lost a lot of weight on the move to Virginia, and has been having such a good time running about the woods around our home that she has remained pretty thin. More than that, she's been throwing up at night once in a while this past week. So we took her to the local vet for the full workup -- shot updates, flea/tick meds, etc. He thought her weight wasn't so bad, but discovered a tumor on her belly. We're waiting to hear back about the malignancy with the blood test results.

Our last Springer Spaniel had cancer about the same edge. I still have vivid memories of bidding farewell as the vet in Arizona put her to sleep in my arms. I shudder to think that we might repeat that sadness with Blossom.

As our friends all know, Blossom is a very special dog to our family. She has a lot of personality, and we are very emotionally tied to her. So this is big news. Since there's nothing to do but wait for the call from the vet, it's kind of "the subject we don't talk about" right now.

But you can bet I'm praying...
